Winter storms can bring in much snow, ice, and cold weather. After the storm subsides and spring starts to arrive.
Winter storms can bring in much snow, ice, and cold weather. After the storm subsides and spring starts to arrive. You may begin to think that the water in lakes or ponds are safe to enter. However, water that may seem warm, can be very cold and be very detrimental to your body. Do your best to stay dry and check with weather channels for safety.
What is Cold Water
According to Weather.gov, fifty-five-degree water may not sound very cold, but it can be deadly. Plunging into cold water of any temperature becomes dangerous if you aren’t prepared for what the sudden exposure can do to your body and brain. Warm air temperatures can create a false sense of security for boaters and beach goers, so if you are planning to be on or near the water, arrive knowing the conditions and how to protect yourself.
Cold water drains body heat up to 4 times faster than cold air. When your body hits cold water, “cold shock” can cause dramatic changes in breathing, heart rate and blood pressure. When Cold Shock and Hypothermia begin to impact your ability to think and act, lifejackets and floatation can create extra time for help to arrive or for you to get out of danger. Even the most experienced cold-water surfers, swimmers or boaters know to prepare for the conditions.

- Have a licensed electrician raise electric components (switches, sockets, circuit breakers and wiring) at least 12″ above your home’s projected flood elevation.
- For drains, toilets, and other sewer connections, install backflow valves or plugs to prevent floodwaters from entering.

How to Keep Safe from Lightning in Linesville
10/30/2021 (Permalink)
Crouching or getting low to the ground lowers your chances of getting struck, but it does not remove you from danger.
When lightning is thought of, we generally think if we are standing outside or if we are taking a shower, we are more susceptible to it striking us. However, is this true? It may be! There are certain steps that you can take to stay safe from lightning. So, what are the best ways to stay safe from lightning? Let’s find out.
How to Stay Safe from Lightning
To protect yourself from lightning, it is best to stay indoors. However, even if you find yourself outdoors while lightning, there are steps you can take to keep safe. CDC.gov recommends crouching or getting low to the ground to lower your chances of getting struck, but it does not remove you from danger. Here are tips to follow if you find yourself outdoors while lightning is present:
- “Immediately get off elevated areas such as hills, mountain ridges, or peaks.
- Never lie flat on the ground. Crouch down in a ball-like position with your head tucked and hands over your ears so that you are down low with minimal contact with the ground.
- Never shelter under an isolated tree.
- Never use a cliff or rocky overhang for shelter.
- Immediately get out of and away from ponds, lakes, and other bodies of water.
- Stay away from objects that conduct electricity (such as barbed wire fences, power lines, or windmills).”

How To Tell If a Tornado is Coming to Meadville
9/9/2021 (Permalink)
One of the biggest storms that can come through Crawford County or Venango County is a tornado.
One of the biggest storms that can come through Crawford County or Venango County is a tornado. They are daunting, dangerous, and destructive. However, with some preparation, and with SERVPRO of Crawford / NE Venango Counties on the job, you can get through one of the storms and get your home restored.
When severe weather is around Meadville, look for these signs to tell if a tornado may form:
- Strong, persistent rotation in the cloud base.
- Whirling dust or debris on the ground under a cloud base -- tornadoes sometimes have no funnel!
- Hail or heavy rain followed by either dead calm or a fast, intense wind shift. Many tornadoes are wrapped in heavy precipitation and can't be seen.
- Day or night - Loud, continuous roar or rumble, which doesn't fade in a few seconds like thunder.
- Night - Small, bright, blue green to white flashes at ground level near a thunderstorm (as opposed to silvery lightning up in the clouds). These mean power lines are being snapped by very strong wind, maybe a tornado.
- Night - Persistent lowering from the cloud base, illuminated or silhouetted by lightning -- especially if it is visually in ground contact or there is a blue-green-white power flash underneath.
Along with these signs, provided by the NOAA, thy have a list of what to do during and after a tornado.
After your family is safe, and the storm has cleared out, stay away from power lines and puddles with wires in them. Watch for debris such as broken glass and nails. Then, call SERVPRO of Crawford / NE Venango Counties.

Sewage Cleanup and Restoration in Crawford and NE Venango Counties
1/11/2021 (Permalink)
Sewage backup should be considered an emergency and dealt with as quickly as possible.
One of the worst things a homeowner can experience is sewage back-up into their home. Whether it was an overflowed toilet, a sewage line back-up, or a city mishap…SERVPRO of Crawford and NE Venango Counties is the premier company for home disaster.
Water from sewer system backups should be considered very dangerous. The water is grossly unsanitary and may contain bacteria and viruses that could cause serious illness. Special training and equipment is necessary to safely clean this type of contamination.
There are three major types of contaminated water. SERVPRO of Crawford / NE Venango Counties will inspect that contaminated water to determine the type of water and then plan the appropriate response to safely restore your home or business.
The three types of contaminated water:
Category 1: "Clean Water"
This is water from a clean source, such as a broken clean water supply line or faucet. If left untreated, category 1 water can quickly degrade into category 2 or 3 water depending upon such factors as time, temperature, and contact with contaminants.
- Water from a clean source like a broken water line
- If left untreated, can degrade into category 2 or 3
Category 2: "Gray Water"
This water has a significant level of contamination that could cause discomfort or illness if ingested. Sources for category 2 water may include washing machine overflow; toilet overflow with some urine, but no feces; or dishwasher overflow.
- May contain bacteria and viruses
- Can quickly degrade into category 3 if left untreated
Category 3: "Black Water"
This water is grossly unsanitary and could cause severe illness or death if ingested, and any contact should be avoided. Sources for category 3 water could include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.
- May contain untreated sewage, harsh chemicals, and microbes
- Water from flooding rivers or sewer backup
Sewage backup should be considered an emergency and dealt with as quickly as possible. We are the water damage restoration specialists with specific training and expertise to safely restore your home or business. We live and work in this community too; we might even be neighbors. A tree falling on your home is a fear every homeowner has felt at one time or another. Whether you just experienced a high-wind storm or you’ve experienced this tragedy first hand---SERVPRO of Crawford and NE Venango Counties has got you covered.
When a tree falls due to being rotted out, high winds, or an ice storm… it can cause major structural damage. The first step is to immediately get you and your family out of the danger zone. Once you are safe, THEN you can focus on calling for help and minimizing the damage.
Hopefully, the tree did not take down power lines with it. But if it did, call the electrical company or 911 immediately. If you do not physically see the down power line check to see if you have power in the house or any flickering lights. If you smell smoke let the electrical company deal with it. They have professionals that personally deal with these types of issues.
The next step would be to prevent further damage from occurring. Shut off your gas at the meter until you are positive the lines are not damaged. You can also tarp the roof and board up broken windows and holes in the structure to avoid rain damage to your belongings.

When you hear about a thunderstorm watch or warning on the radio or television, do you know the difference? Do you take one more seriously than the other? Or do you not pay any mind to either?
A severe thunderstorm watch is when there is a possibility for severe thunderstorms in and near the watch area. It is advised to remain informed and ready to act in the event of a severe thunderstorm warning is issued. During a watch, you don’t necessarily need to alter any plans, just stay aware of the current weather conditions.
A severe thunderstorm warning is when there has been reports of severe weather by spotters or radar. Warnings indicate an imminent danger to life and property. Severe thunderstorms can produce hail greater than or equal to one inch and strong winds that meet or exceed 58 mph.

While some may not be informed on such warnings, there are those who hear the warning but do not heed to it; therefore, it is important to stay engaged and have a plan in place in the event of a severe thunderstorm and if evacuation is necessary.

Interesting Facts About Flood Damage and Prevention Tips:
The average cost of flood damage is around $5,000 to $10,000 depending on the type of damage and where the water came from. To avoid having to spend a few months of your salary on repairing your home, try these prevention tips instead!
- An inspection and flushing your water heater once a year, by a plumber, can contribute to preventing it bursting on you and flooding the area.
- Replacing the rubber hoses on all appliances that use water with metal braided hoses can help to avoid the failing of the rubber ones as they can get hard and burst. Check all hoses, even the metal braided ones every year.
- Leaks from toilets are often indicated by a little leakage from the base. Ask everyone in the family to stand in the bathroom, after flushing and watching for any tell-tale leaks.
- Do you know where to locate the main water shut-off? If a pipe bursts inside, you need to be able to get it turned off quickly.
- If you have a sump pump, now is a good time to get it checked and think about a backup unit.
- Always be looking for signs of plumbing leaks, such as on ceilings and walls; look for stains and moisture on walls and floors.
- Leaking or even broken pipes are often gushing water, and it is not noticed because it might be hidden. Check out your water usage when no faucets are turned on; locate the water meter and take a reading, then use no water for an hour or so and read it again. Has it moved? If so, you have a leak someplace, so get a plumber to check it out.
- Always monitor your monthly water bill. If it goes up a lot one billing cycle, you might have the need for a plumber to come in and check all connections.
- Since a lot of water comes from inside your home and can damage many walls, floors, and furniture; this can provide the moisture needed for mold to grow. To prevent mold, you want to eliminate any moisture as quickly as possible.
