Why is Rain So Soothing When You Sleep?

When I opened my eyes this morning…it was still dark. There was a slight chill in the air, and it was raining so peacefully outside. I did not want to get up. The sound of the rain tapping my roof did nothing more than make me want to sleep more and hold my covers tighter. It gave me such an inner peace--- just like the waves of the ocean.
And then I thought? Why does the rain make us so calm? Why is the harmony so strong? According to researchers, we love rain and other water noises because we perceive them as non-threatening. Main Line Today says, “sudden sounds jolt us out of our reverie, triggering an evolutionary response known as the threat activated vigilance system. Rainfall not only lacks such jolts — it actively blocks out sudden noises that would otherwise bother us. It’s nature’s version of a white noise machine.”
Ah. Makes sense. That simple and repetitive sound makes us relax and forget about the busy world for a little bit. Even thunder does this for some folks. Not to undermine the seriousness of a thunder and lightning storm. We may feel peace with the flashes of light, the boom of the thunder in our chests, and the sweet sound of rain. But no doubt, a thunderstorm can cause major havoc…and all our tranquility goes right out of the window.
